Money Making Idea: 1 The Rom Com Computer Game Spin-off

Ladies and gentle readers, after a random conversation last week I believe I've stumbled onto a gap in a fairly lucrative market. One of my favourite computer game series of the last few years has been the Batman (Arkham) series and it set me thinking a lot of action games have computer game tie ins but never any romantic comedies.

Think about it, imagine "There's Something About Mary" level one, as 16 year olds you have to get Mary to the Prom* while avoiding any potential embarrassment, only to get to a cut scene at the end where your knackers get caught in your flies.

In "What Women Want" you get to spend a level being a chauvinistic pig before changing your ways for the rest of the game whilst reading womens minds.

In "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" after dumping G-Girl, you have to spend the rest of the game trying to stay alive as your super ex throws sharks and comets at you.

The possibilities are endless, although how your supposed to make up with someone using only four buttons I haven't figured out yet. No doubt there'll be a few glitches to overcome but this has the makings of a good money making plan.

What winds you up about your favourite TV shows?

For those of you who don't know CSI has been one of the major TV successes of the last 15 years. Spawning two spin offs, creating numerous brilliant characters and bringing The Who via the medium of the theme tune to a new generation. Personally I was a late comer to the show only jumping aboard with the season five finale directed by Quentin Tarantino. However despite enjoying the show I've always had this one small thing that annoyed me about it.

The team will arrive at the crime scene, examine it, find some incriminating evidence - be it a bullet or piece of purple fluff and then actually investigate the crime. Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! WHOA! Shouldn't they be handing the evidence over to the actual detectives so they can investigate? Is it just me who thinks this is a large leap from logic? D.B. by all means come to the scene, have a scoot round, give the police something to work with but after that get back to your lab do your thing with the bunson burners and leave the investigating to the cops.

Oh and another thing, leave the interrogations to Brass - the regular on the show that's actually a detective.

What about you ladies and gentle readers, is there anything about your favourite programmes that drive you up the wall?

TV Review 24: Live Another Day Finale

Last night the finale of 24: Live Another Day aired in the UK bringing to an end the comeback series for 24 after a four year break. All in all I'd say the series has been a success, new viewers have started watching, old viewers have returned to the fold and are happy with the show. On top of that it looks like the series is confident that it can recreate the heights of the past and instead of wrapping things up like they did in series 8 we have an open ended ending that sets the scene for a future series.

As usual Jack Bauer was centre stage and was put through hell, as par the course with 24 characters survived and some were killed off - some cruelly via curve balls. Of note away from the action were some quiet character moments Stephen Fry and William Devanes final scene was heart breaking, Jack acknowledging Chloe as he best friend was also a good moment but the moment of the episode and perhaps the series was Jack on hearing about the death of another character holding up his gun and for a moment considering suicide. Of course he doesn't - he starts killing the bad guys and one in particular via a katana.

We get a flash forward after the action of the "plot" is dealt with and I found this actually helped the episode. Despite being a huge fan of the show I've found bar the odd season (such as 1 and 8) most of the series endings had been a little bit awkward. Here we get a chance for 10 hours to go by and for the characters to feel the ramifications of the days actions, give some characters some good scenes and set up a potential future season.

Also I think the location of London helped give the show a fresh look, I also believed the Washington location helped season 7. I hope the series goes in this direction as terrorism is a world wide problem and with the world as Jacks playground it opens up the series to new possibilities.

In short a good end to a fine comeback and I for one want more.

The Script Leak of Terror

For those of you who don't know five scripts from the new series of Doctor Who have been leaked, a little under two months before the series is due to air. The BBC released the following statement:

We deeply regret this and apologise to all the show's fans, the BBC and the cast and crew who have worked tirelessly making the series. We would like to make a plea to anyone who might have any of this material and [the] spoilers associated with it not to share it with a wider audience so that everyone can enjoy the show as it should be seen when it launches. We know only too well that Doctor Who fans are the best in the world and we thank them for their help with this and their continued loyalty.

I have to say in this day and age I'm surprised this kind of thing hasn't happened before and on a regular basis. In saying that it doesn't quite beat the DVD's being released before the season finale had aired the other year, when the BBC screw up they certainly screw up big. In saying that I'm well aware that a certain type of fan is currently looking up these scripts, devouring them and telling all and sundry whats in them. Personally I can't see the point, I don't want to read these new episodes - I want to see them on TV. I don't want to know who the villain of the week is or any plot developments as I want to see them and learn them as they happen.

A regular update on this blog is my effort to catch up with the big finish output as over the years I have fallen a decade or so behind. Most of this was due to periods of unemployment and money needing to go elsewhere, while this was going on I didn't read BF plot breakdowns to keep up - I waited until I could afford them. When Lost and Sky 1 disappeared from Virgin I waited until the DVD box sets came out. When a comic I read released a few preview pages I never read them - especially bloody preliminary sketches.

In short lady and gentle readers it seems that some fans these days lack discipline. Being a fan is about the show, not showing off all you know Its about the show and in some cases spoiling it. If you want to look up the scripts look them up, if you want to talk about them ask weather the person your talking to wants to discuss them or would rather not know. There is room on fandom for both sides of the spoiler debate, just keep enjoying the show and don't ruin anyone elses enjoyment.

The Big Finish Catch Up: June 2014

So here's what I listened to from Big Finish in June and its three releases instead of the usual two:

The first release this month is the 8th Doctor entry into the "Destiny of The Doctor" series Enemy Aliens. Its an audio book series featuring a single story for each Doctor with a slight running theme and this entry is voiced by India Fisher otherwise known as the 8th Doctor companion Charley and the voice of Masterchef. Its rather an engaging fun romp of a story featuring spy's, intrigue and very much feels like Doctor Who does The 39 Steps, highly recommended and rather a fun entry into this series.

This months second story is Dreamtime featuring the 7th Doctor, Ace and Hex. In actual fact this is the second story for Hex and his first trip in the Tardis - which is something of a selling point for this story. Without doubt this is a belter of a release and may be the best I've heard in quite some time, it actually feels like something the TV series would try to do and if I had to use a tag line to describe it I'd say Ayres Rock in space. The first episode is a proper early era first episode, setting up the situation and it feels like a horror story with the action capable of starting at any moment. Simon Forward manages to mix the modern day world with ancient aboriginal mythology and to his credit the story works. The Galyari make a much welcome appearance (but sadly no Clutch this time) and help add an outsiders view to the story, the regulars are on fine form and we have the makings of a good Tardis crew.

The final release this week is Terror Firma featuring the 8th Doctor, Charley and C'rizz in what I believe is the 8th Doctors first release where he is no longer the current Doctor and a story that is not part of a season. We are back in the old home universe after the end of the previous season and as a welcome The Doctor is up against the Daleks and Davros. I can sum up this story easily by saying this story is full of fantastic ideas but I felt like I was listening to a first draft as the production and script get in the way of the story. Also sadly the script (as well as the title) tends to telegraph revelation that should hit us for six. What we end up is a rather run of the mill story that could and should have been something special. Although the final scene is fantastic and sets in motion possibilities for the future of this Tardis crew.
